Logo Type

Logotype, commonly know as a logo, is a graphic design representation, image or trademark that is created symbolize one's business or organization. A logo can appear on company letterhead, advertising material and signs to help create a company “Brand.” A brand is important to create associations and expectations among products made by a company. A brand often includes an explicit logo, fonts, color schemes, symbols and sound that may be developed to represent implicit values, ideas, and even personality.

Logos originated in the 19th century. After a surge in industrial manufacturing that led to an increase in output, global distribution, and the beginnings of competition, logos helped consumers differentiate various products within the same industry. Emblems or symbols also became common on products, packages and labels so buyers could easily recognize the product they preferred.

Logos have revolutionized the advertising world. Once very costly to produce, the incredible technological advances in computers and computer software have allowed even small businesses to be able to afford their creation and distribution.  Today, the time-tested adage that "simpler is better" is still the best strategy for logo creation. This is because any business has less and less time to impress their customers. The best logo designs are very stylish yet remain conservative, which makes them eye-catching and easier for the brain to memorize.

There are seven important steps that I will employ to visualize, design and finish your logo.

1) Selecting the Logo Concept

We must first determine what your logo should say about your company. The most obvious beginning strategy would be to determine an image that relates to your business. Some simple examples would be a house for real estate or a car for a car dealer.

When creating your logo, there are three key elements that make up a credible and high quality logo design.

> Does the logo portray the company effectively as an expert in their field?
> Is the logo contemporary, symbolizing a forward-thinking and positive outlook?
> Is your corporate message clear to the consumer?

I will work with you to make sure the logo we decide on adheres to the important fundamental concepts.

2) Creating a Tagline

When creating a tagline it is very important to consider whether or not you have a strategy of marketing global or just regional, or at most just the United States. This is because, when taglines are translated into other languages, they can be mean completely different things.

Here are three well-known examples.

> Kentucky Fried Chicken's tagline finger-lickin' good translates in Chinese as eat your fingers off.

> When General Motors introduced the Chevy Nova in South America, they failed to do their research and nova, translated in Spanish meant it won't go, or it doesn't run.

> In Taiwan, Pepsi introduced its tagline Come alive with the Pepsi Generation. In Chinese, the slogan is translated as Pepsi will bring your ancestors back from the dead.

3) Choose and appropriate Shape, Size and Logo Type

> Shape - Iconic logos are one of the most common types of logo and consist of a single graphical element, icon or design.  It often includes the company name below or to the side of the icon, for example: Nike, AOL or Michelin. When considering iconic logos, it is important to make the symbol fit any of the common geometrical shapes. The best shapes to use are symmetrical geometrical shapes.

> Size - The prefect logo design will look great on a billboard, signboard, business card or a pen.
Logo Type - These consist only of the company name. A unique font or unique layout style can make a great logo, for example: Sony, Kellogg s, Coca-Cola, IBM.

4) Logos can also be Illustrative or Integrated

> Illustrative – This logo consists of a unique design; usually representing the company’s field of business. These logos are often very eye-catching, detailed and impressive. As a result of their detail and colors, illustrative logos are difficult to reproduce and therefore expensive.

> Integrated - An integrated logo is the combination of a logotype and illustrative logo. These logos are even more rare than the illustrative logos because of their expense.

5) Choose your Colors carefully

Keep in mind that your color scheme should be appropriate for the vision of your company. Colors will have a profound impact on viewers. Research reveals that red and orange are known to produce excitation and red can also signify danger. Dark blue creates comfort and relaxation while yellow may create a feeling of irritation. So, if you are creating a logo design for a nursing home or a hospital, it might be a good idea to refrain from using reds and bright yellows. A basic strategy is to keep in mind the personality you wish to express for your business. Do you want to portray a professional image? Try using black, silver, and other dark colors. Do you want to come across as fun, dynamic, and funky? Try using bright and vibrant colors. There are truly many important options to consider.

6) Check your Competition

What designs, graphics, and colors are they using? There is so much to learn by checking out what everyone else is doing, especially if they are successful. After you logo is created, it is very important to apply for a trademark. If your logo is trademarked, this prevents competitors and other third parties from stealing it.

7) Reproduction Costs

The more detailed and colorful the logo design, the more difficult it will be to reproduce. This usually translates to a higher cost. In General, the most important points to Consider are that a logo should:

> Attract attention and leave an impression
> Create a look that in unique
> Reflect the personality of the company
> Less is More
> And last but not least, when in doubt, K.I.S.S. (Keep It Simple Stupid).
